DStv And Showmax Subscribers Bid Farewell To Euphoria And Peacemaker As Canal+'s Doesn't Renew Content Deal For HBO And Warner Bros.

Last year, Canal+ and Warner Bros. Discovery created a media debacle when it was announced that Cartoon Network and 11 other channels would be removed from DStv. Paramount was already closing 4 other channels on the platform.

It was not until a last minute deal was reached where Canal+ thought of merging MultiChoice's contract with that of its operations in Europe. This deal included a possible rollout of HBO Max as Canal+ will be rolling it out in various markets.

Initially, it was reported by some outlets that this new agreement saved the licensing deals for M-Net and Showmax. But others were quick to spot it's sudden exclusion from this new agreement.

According to News24, this new agreement excluded premium TV series from HBO and Warner Bros. film and TV studios. This means DStv and Showmax consumers will be missing out on Game Of Thrones spinoff, A Knight Of Seven Kingdoms.

This is because Canal+ is busy slashing tires at MultiChoice with TLNovelas that is scheduled to close by 31 January 2026. 

MultiChoice had been losing subscribers with those numbers dropping from 17.3 million in 2023 to 14.5 million in 2025. This whole ordeal took a bigger plunge in some African markets particularly Kenya where cuts reached between 80% to 90%.

Canal+ is trying to put out a fire even if that means DStv and Showmax subscribers miss out on The White Lotus and House Of Dragons. As the French company deemed M-Net's agreement with Warner Bros. non viable.

As mentioned, MultiChoice has been losing DStv consumers and their premium market has been under siege post the pandemic.

M-Net has been the glue to the DStv Premium structure but with massive cord cutting seen in the United States and elsewhere. One channel alone isn't enough to entice viewers to subscribe especially if they're more affordable options.

That doesn't mean the loss of The White Lotus and The Glided Age won't impact M-Net's remaining viewers immensely as this will just lead to even more cord cutting for DStv.

Canal+ has been boasting about being a super aggregator and the plan is to have HBO Max funnel all this content. The problem is that for linear viewers that aren't streaming it only leads to even lesser content.

HBO Max's parent company is currently undergoing a takeover process by Netflix and should the deal succeed all this content will likely be made exclusive to the streamer.

James meanwhile is trying to cope living with two warring women; Crystal accuses Morgan of speaking to the police and reacts violently. James fears that the police are closing in on him and his hallucinations are getting worse. He goes on the run. Paula again is trying to cope with her brother’s alcoholism and is having nightmares herself.

Episode 3 – Wednesday, 21 January 2026

Mac tries to recover from the attack but faces fierce repercussions at work. Meanwhile James is facing charges. Determinedly Mac continues to dig into James’ past, discovering that he had a troubling start to life. As if things couldn’t get any worse for Paula, she faced with the awful reality that Callum may never fully recover. She and Mac continue to get closer, but she is haunted by the image of James coming after her. When he is released, she faces him once more, but this time she is prepared for a fight.

 

DStv In Trouble. Netflix Obtains Global Rights To Sony Group Films Including Spider-Man And Jumanji

Netflix obtained global streaming rights to Sony Group’s films after they complete their run in theatres and pay-per-view, adding releases from one of Hollywood’s biggest studios.

A multiyear agreement announced on Thursday (Jan 15) expands a partnership the companies struck in 2021. That accord gave Netflix US rights to show Sony films after their theatrical release and after they are available for online purchase or rental, as well as rights in Germany and parts of Asia.

Sony Pictures will gradually start appearing on Netflix globally later this year as individual territory rights become available, the companies said in a statement, with the rollout complete by early 2029. As part of the deal, Netflix will also be able to license select films and TV series from Sony’s library, which includes hit franchises such as Spider-Man and Jumanji. 

The deal is worth roughly US$7 billion and runs till 2032, according to sources familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named as the terms are not public. It beefs up Netflix’s lineup of theatrical pictures, a slate that could grow even more if the streaming company acquires the studio operations of Warner Bros Discovery. It’s vying with Paramount Skydance with duelling bids for Warner Bros.

In 2024, Netflix expanded a deal with Comcast’s NBCUniversal, adding rights to stream live-action films to an agreement for animated pictures from the studio’s DreamWorks Animation and Illumination divisions. 

Starting in 2027, the live-action films from Universal Pictures and Focus Features, which include franchises such as Fast & Furious and Jurassic Park, will appear on Netflix “no later than eight months following theatrical release”, the companies said at the time.

DStv Needs To Be Restructured

Rationality is realising that gone are the days when DStv could offer a bouquet of entertainment from across the world. As suppliers and consumers shift their focus to online viewing further reducing the portfolio for linear consumers.

In general, there's nothing wrong with DStv if it offered more Zee World than HBO content as that's where most consumers reside. It's not that House Of Dragons and The White Lotus aren't superb but most would rather pay for this if it were on Showmax.

If Canal+ is hoping to scale up on subscriber count through its MultiChoice buyout the only best option would be rethinking how content gets packaged.

The premium market needed to be restructured even before the pandemic. Consumers haven't gotten anything worthwhile outside of sports and what little is left is being duplicated and becoming more accessible on cheaper packages.

MultiChoice initially offered DStv Select 1 and 2 in South Africa and from what I recall it's active in few African markets. Think of DStv Easyview but with only the must haves of DStv but expensive which is M-Net, KykNET, BBC Earth and SS Grandstand.

This is something I believe needs to be revived somehow then there's the other which is a standalone sports package or add-on.

SuperSport takes a very large audience share within DStv while eMedia, SABC and even Netflix can offer select sporting events. SuperSport continues to offer the whole enchilada from Premier League, NBA, La Liga, WWE and Moto GP.

Canal+ you could try to offer a promotions to consumers who wish to see select sporting events.

Getting back to the packages, MultiChoice had explored an entertainment only package maybe split this offering into two separate packages. One package carries premium networks like Mzansi Magic while the other has Mzansi Wethu.

Existing Threat Awaiting SuperSport And DStv Customers

In 2024, it was reported Netflix had acquired global rights to WWE's catalogue which include Raw, SmackDown, NXT and live PPVs like Summerslam. As of last year, it has been streaming in the US, UK, Canada and various other international markets.

At the time, SuperSport had confirmed that they remain the exclusive home to WWE's offering across Africa. Of course, this multi-year agreement between both parties was finalised back in 2022 and will conclude sometime in 2027.

If anyone remembers how Disney+ panned out, you had various countries in Europe and other parts of the world awaiting for the streaming service. This was because of existing agreements with other broadcasters.

Then when that fell through it opened up the doors for Disney+.

This is what is expected to happen with SuperSport once their current agreement for WWE expires. You won't have a 24 hour channel for old PPVs, Mzansi Magic and all other SuperSport channels will no longer have live broadcasts to Crown Jewel.

MultiChoice is less likely to replicate WWE and even if that were to be the case it's likely to end up like TNA Wrestling on e.tv. The only logical option would be bulking up the offering on SuperSport Action in the event WWE ceases to exist.

If I'm being honest here, SuperSport has a lot going for itself despite existing threats in the market. To some extent, recovery is possible for them unlike DStv which has seen more content being taken away without alternatives in place.

Maybe I'm exaggerating here and WWE continues through 2030 on SuperSport but if you read between the lines. This deal is sort of being built up like that of Disney+ were some things SuperSport can't prevent from occuring happen.

Were Mexican Imports On TLNovelas A Miss On DStv?

As I've reported, TLNovelas will be going dark on DStv in the coming weeks likely as part of Canal+'s aggressive cost cuts at MultiChoice. The channel is on track to wrap up Love To Death and It Had To Be You as Fall Into Temptation concludes this week.

Fans of the shows feel like MultiChoice's response is vague because often when a channel is removed the same statements. All consumers want is some clarity and what led TLNovelas to become an afterthought as Telemundo lives another day.

Over the years, Telemundo had seen a major drop in primetime and TLNovelas was regarded to some of these viewers as their holy grace. It features content from Mexico's biggest broadcasters Las Estrellas with Rubi, Love Spell and A Woman Of Steel.

What went wrong?

Firstly, we live in a market which is dominant by African stories and this content takes up a 40% audience share in primetime. TLNovelas was most likely not pulling up those same numbers making it vulnerable to potential cuts.

As for Telemundo, this is basically the HBO of Spanish television with shows like Iron Rose and Queen Of The South commanding a wider audience. It wouldn't be something you'd just let go despite Canal+'s scrutiny.

TLNovelas entire existence was solely based on archived Mexican telenovelas and those can often lead to low viewership.

Another problem stems from TelevisaUnivison, they had existing agreements with other local broadcasters for these shows. TLNovelas was basically another Discovery Family or Nicktoons funneled with repeats for some viewers.

Could Discovery Global Look To Overhaul Cartoon Network?

Continuing onto last year, Warner Bros. Discovery is exploring a potential sale where Netflix bags IPs such as Harry Potter and Looney Tunes. Then there's Paramount that wants the whole enchilada including CNN, Cartoon Network and TLC.

For the part that Netflix excluded from the deal, the plan is to get that spun off into a separate entity, Discovery Global. It will be loaded in debt which amounts to $20 billion as Netflix takes up $10-$15 billion from its buyout of Warner Bros.

Discovery Global is expected to generate a lot of cash flow but with immense cord cutting as seen with that of Canal+'s DStv. The revenue will continue to plummet and channels like Cartoon Network and Cartoonito (or. Boomerang) aren't immune.

Netflix had stated that if it's buyout of Warner Bros. succeeded that the company would continue to operate independently. Licensing agreements with Canal+, Sky and even Discovery Global would be retained.

These means shows like Tiny Toons Looniversity and Teen Titans GO! would continue to be seen on Cartoon Network. But then there's lingering fears from various consumers about the viability of the brand under Discovery Global.

Bloomberg did it's piece on Cartoon Network last year where it was reported that the network makes between 15% to 20% of what it had in 2014. And also that Warner Bros. Discovery only relies on the brand for its older catalogue.

The fear for some here again is that Discovery Global will slash the tires of Cartoon Network or possible keep only the international variant. Think of Universal Kids, it's predecessors are Sky Kids in the UK and DreamWorks Channel everywhere else.

Discovery Global could lean more toward existing partnerships with Hasbro for Discovery Family and WeTV for MeTV Toons.

Trace Ngoma, Trace Gospel And WWE Channel Now On DStv Access???

MultiChoice had been running an Upsize promotion on the DStv platform since November 2025 as part of a 30 year celebration. This meant lower packages would get access to premium content at no additional charge.

Unbeknownst to some viewers was the sudden inclusion of Trace Ngoma, Trace Gospel and the 24 hour WWE channel on DStv Access.

WWE Channel (Channel 128) is a dedicated 24-hour channel for all things World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). It offers flagship shows like Raw, SmackDown, and NXT, as well as pay-per-views documentaries, and archival content.

Trace Gospel (Channel 332) is a 24-hour music channel dedicated to showcasing the diversity and richness of local and international gospel music.

Trace Ngoma (Channel 326) is the new home for South African music and culture, with a strong focus on local genres and artists. "Ngoma" reflects themes of drumbeat, celebration, and heritage.

Last year, Paramount had shuttered MTV Base, BET, CBS Reality and CBS Justice due to a restructuring following it's buyout by Skydance. It was stated by MultiChoice that consumers could browse similar content on Mzansi Magic and Channel O.

This was their way of saying no plans are underway to retain Judge Judy much less rollout replacements. Consumers would be starting the new year with 4 less channels.

Since late 2025, Trace Africa, Trace Gospel and WWE brands which had been exclusive to DStv Premium, Compact+, Compact and Family are now listed on Access.

In an enquiry to MultiChoice, they were only able to confirm the inclusion of Trace Urban's other TV channels. We can only assume that maybe MultiChoice wants to make Access the premier destination for Gqom and Amapiano.

As for WWE, MultiChoice had been very mim about whether it's a permanent addition but if you do browse the company's services in other parts of Africa. WWE does serve as a permanent fixture to these consumers and oddly it wasn't the case in SA.

New Scooby-Doo! Gokko Show To Launch In 2027

During a launch event for the new "Scooby-Doo x Miss Frandy" makeup line in Brazil, held in November 2025, a retrospective of the franchise's history was presented. In that context, the development of a new animated "Scooby-Doo" project titled Scooby-Doo! Gokko was announced, with a planned premiere in 2027.

The project would follow an aesthetic and conceptual line similar to Tom & Jerry Gokko, a series of animated shorts in a kawaii/chibi style, clearly inspired by Japanese productions like Hello Kitty. This series originally premiered in Japan in 2022 and made its international debut in mid-2025, currently available on both YouTube and HBO Max.

On the other hand, there is a possibility that Scooby-Doo! Gokko could be the final version of the "Go-Go Mystery Machine" project, which may have evolved—including a title change—to align with the visual and conceptual identity of Tom & Jerry Gokko.

So far, no official updates have been announced about that production, which was revealed in June 2024 and conceived with strong influences from Asian culture, incorporating new characters and a setting in Japan.

However, this hypothesis seems, for now, less likely.

"Go-Go Mystery Machine" was announced in 2024.

The title refers to the Japanese word gokko (ごっこ), used to describe children's role-playing games, which—just like with Tom & Jerry Gokko—suggests a softer, more stylized reinterpretation aimed at a younger audience of the classic mystery-solving gang.

In this sense, it cannot be ruled out that Warner Bros. is considering establishing "Gokko" as a sub-brand to develop chibi versions of its most iconic animated properties, a strategy that could eventually extend to franchises like Looney Tunes or even the DC Universe.

We have already seen child-oriented versions of Mystery Inc. in A Pup Named Scooby-Doo (1988).

In addition to Tom and Jerry, Warner Bros. maintains a close and long-standing relationship with anime. Beyond the legendary Toonami block on Cartoon Network and Adult Swim—where series like Dragon Ball, Naruto, Sailor Moon, Gundam Wing, Inuyasha, Yu Yu Hakusho, and One Piece aired—the company has attempted on various occasions to translate some of its most iconic characters into the language of Japanese animation. For example, both The Amazing World of Gumball and the 2020 reboot of Animaniacs include sequences animated with a clear anime aesthetic.

In the case of Adult Swim, the network produced completely original anime series such as Fena: Pirate Princess, Ninja Kamui, Uzumaki, the most recent seasons of FLCL, and Blade Runner: Black Lotus, inspired by the world-renowned film franchise. Similarly, Rick and Morty featured several shorts animated by Japanese studios like Studio Deen, Sola Entertainment, and Telecom Animation Film, in addition to a full spin-off titled Rick and Morty: The Anime. This is joined by productions developed entirely in Japan, such as Batman Ninja and Suicide Squad Isekai, both created by Warner Bros. in collaboration with local studios.

Within Cartoon Network's programming, We Bare Bears had a spin-off, We Baby Bears, which—without being full anime—explicitly adopted a Japanese, chibi, and kawaii style designed to connect with Eastern audiences. Likewise, series like Teen Titans, ThunderCats, and Ben 10 show a marked anime influence in both their visual design and staging. Even Craig of the Creek featured an anime-style opening sequence produced especially for its YouTube release.

Finally, Warner Bros. co-produced with Toei Animation an anime-format series of The Powerpuff Girls, titled Powerpuff Girls Z. Additionally, at the end of 2024, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim premiered, a prequel film to the successful live-action trilogy, produced by Sola Digital Arts. This adds to the development of a "Japanese" version of Wacky Races, though, by all indications, that last project was ultimately shelved.

For now, no further details about Scooby-Doo! Gokko were provided during the presentation, though new updates on this project are expected in the coming months.

MTV Will No Longer Air Music Programming Following The Closure Of MTV Base

During the month, Paramount closed four channels within the African market this comprises of BET, MTV Base, CBS Reality and CBS Justice. This forms part of corporate restructure which saw several linear channels close around the world.

This includes MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live in various European markets, BET in France and Nickelodeon in New Zealand.

For DStv consumers that are hoping that some fragment of MTV Base will form part of MTV shouldn't bet on it for the foreseeable future. This is because Paramount is leaning more toward reality TV for the main network.

This comprises of shows like Teen Moms, Dating Naked UK and Caught In The Act: Unfaithful. Award shows such as MTV EMAs were put on pause for the 2025 period and might be the closest anyone has to this fragment of MTV.

Speculation making the mount is that these are also in danger of getting the axe as seen with most of BET's award shows like Soul Train Awards and Hip-Hop Awards.

The new management at Paramount is getting with times and fact is Spotify and YouTube are gradually phasing out the likes of MTV Base. Plan B is to make MTV more leaner with documentaries, reality shows and some behind the scenes.

Problem here with Plan B is that MTV hasn't been as relevant as in a long while and the only reason it got this far was it's music brand it shuttered globally.

As it stands, MTV is at greater risk of following the same route as E! with the cancellation of Ridiculousness and Catfish: The TV Show. Majority of their audience latched onto these shows without them it's makes survival almost impossible.

Looks Like ePlesier Is Switching To 7 Day Viewing

During the month, it was reported e.tv would be adjusting its primetime schedule by having Kelders Van Geheime move to 19:00 as e.tv News takes up it's former timeslot at 18:30. The soon to be axed Scandal! will move to where e.tv News at 20:00.

Prior to this, eExtra made changes to it's morning schedule adding Uzioziola: Regrets from e.tv while scrapping House Of Zwide and Smoke & Mirrors. Another adjustment is for Kelders Van Geheime which moves to 19:30 from 19 January.

Now ePlesier will serve as channel number 3 to get a revamped schedule as eMedia Investments' had been teasing this for sometime. From what we can gather through a recent post it appears all shows will now air everyday including weekends.

Other channels already seen on Openview to already offer 7 day viewing is mainly Bollywood channels like Star Life and Star Khanya.

For a channel that leans on reruns, it shouldn't come as a suprise I mean eMedia Investments' made similar attempts last year with Scandal! and it only burnt it's ad revenue. With a repeats channel, there isn't much loss for the broadcaster.

With ePlesier's switch to 7 days it's likely that Kelders Van Geheime will fall off the bandwagon as premiere epsiodes remain on e.tv from Mondays to Fridays. Another scenario is them airing previous week episodes.

Juana's Story And Aurora's Quest No Longer Moving Forward On DStv Following The Closure Of TLNovelas

MultiChoice will be axing TelevisaUnivison's TLNovelas channel from DStv and GOtv platforms by the end of the month. As part of Canal+'s cost cutting measures following it's takeover of the company.

According to some insiders, TLNovelas allegedly had two shows slated for African audiences and were slated to launch in the first quarter of the year. Following their axing, these titles would be directed to TLN Network in Angola and Mozambique.

Affected shows included Juana's Story (La Historia De Juana) and Aurora's Quest (El Ángel De Aurora).

Synopsis for Juana's Story 

The narrative follows Juana Guadalupe Bravo (played by Camila Valero), a 20-year-old virgin and engineering student. Her life is unexpectedly upended during a routine medical checkup when she is accidentally artificially inseminated due to a clinical mix-up. 

As Juana grapples with an impossible pregnancy, she eventually crosses paths with the biological father, Gabriel Rubio (played by Brandon Peniche). Gabriel is a powerful businessman and cancer survivor who had previously frozen his sperm, believing it was his only chance to have a child and leave a legacy. Despite their vastly different backgrounds, the two begin a complicated journey that evolves into a deep, unconventional romance. 

Synopsis for Aurora's Quest

The story is set in motion by Jezabel, Aurora's jealous sister, who orchestrates a brutal attack on Aurora by a man known as "El Pintas". Aurora becomes pregnant as a result of this rape. 

On Aurora’s wedding day to her fiancé, Antonio, Jezabel presents a falsified DNA test claiming the baby is not his. Simultaneously, El Pintas calls Antonio to falsely claim he and Aurora were lovers. Devastated, Antonio abandons Aurora at the altar.

Driven by shame and sexism, Aurora’s father, Miguel, snatches her newborn son, Gabriel, and gives him to a humble couple, Pascual and Victoria, to raise. 

Gabriel has grown up as Ángel Santos, unaware of his true origin. Destiny brings him into Aurora’s world when he begins working at her corporation.

Development Alert: SABC 2 Acquired Broadcasting Rights To Ouma Sarie From eExtra's Kuiertyd, To Launch In February 2026

Not long ago, it was reported that SABC 2 would be making minor adjustments to primetime schedule in February 2026. This includes the reinstatement of Afrikaans news and to no one surprise the induction of the sitcom Ouma Sarie.

A few years ago, SABC made the decision to cancel 7de Laan as the soap was deemed non viable. Since then, SABC had made no attempts at replacing the soap with it's timeslot that was taken up by Deal Or No Deal SA and reruns of Vetkoekpaleis.

This led consumers to rely on rival broadcasters such as eExtra's Kuiertyd whose parent company coincidentally launched a rivalled soap Kelders Van Geheime. Even KykNET features an extensive lineup of shows such as Binnelanders and Suidooster.

Now it looks like SABC 2 is going back to basics and could as well be trying to revisit this market with Ouma Sarie from 9 February at 18:30.

Ouma Sarie is a popular South African comedy series centered on a no-nonsense, straight-talking Karoo grandmother who navigates daily life with sass, humor, and a unique ability to get her way, becoming a beloved figure known for her blunt advice and community presence, starring Moses Williams as the titular character in a hit Afrikaans sitcom. 

SABC 2 Ushers Into The New Year With The Revival Of Nuus, Debuts Pimville And More In February 2026

In the coming weeks, e.tv will be reshuffling their primetime schedule with Smoke & Mirrors and Scandal! concluding soon. Kelders Van Geheime will now be grouped with these shows as e.tv News takes up it's 18:30 timeslot.

Last year, Muvhango concluded on SABC 2 after its 28 year run on the channel and plans were underway to fill up the slot with a new series, Pimville. The show was initially slated to launch in August 2025 but was delayed to February 2026.

There was very little communication over this and as you can imagine for the rest of the year SABC 2 was filling up it's schedule with mostly repeats.

In the case of Pimville, it's likely to end up in the same boat as Queendom on the defunct BET Africa and The Estate on SABC 3.

Firstly, SABC entrusted the livelihood of this show to Bakwena Productions who had been involved in various scandals over non-payment. You can only assume Pimville is another victim and SABC has enough episodes for most of 2026.

Another development at SABC 2 is the apparent reinstatement of Afrikaans news bulletin at 18:30 in February 2026. This comes after SABC had told the media that they'd fold this bulletin alongside a batch of Afrikaans content on SABC 3.

This is part of their so-called "new era" which is just a facade as the move only damaged the viewership for these shows. Some insiders had stated there was no market research done when these changes were made last year.

The cash strapped broadcaster has acquired the Afrikaans sitcom Ouma Sarie from eExtra's Kuiertyd. This is probably their way of trying to fill the void after the abrupt cancellation of 7de Laan.

eVOD Unveils New Turkish Drama Aslan Leeuhart

eVOD, a South African based streaming services offering locally produced content and international services has announced the addition of a new series titled Aslan Leeuhart. Known as Aile in Turkey, the series will be streaming on eVOD from January 7th.

Synopsis for Aslan Leeuhart 

Much of the drama stems from Hülya’s obsessive control over her sons. She views Devin as a threat to her dominance and uses manipulative tactics—including using Aslan's estranged brother, Cihan, as a "trump card"—to sabotage their relationship.

Cihan Soykan, the "dark" member of the family, seeks therapy from Devin in secret. This leads to a massive confrontation between the two brothers as the bloody secrets of the Soykan past are exposed.

The Soykans face external threats from rival crime families, most notably İlyas Koruzade. This conflict escalates into bombings and targeted attacks, forcing Aslan and Cihan to form an uneasy alliance to protect the family.

Throughout the series, Aslan and Devin fight to build a "normal" life. A major late-series plot point involves Devin's high-risk pregnancy, which she initially tries to hide from Aslan due to the danger their lifestyle poses. 

It starred Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ as Aslan Soykan, Serenay Sarıkaya as Devin Akın, Nur Sürer as Hülya Soykan, Nejat İşler as Cihan Soykan, Canan Ergüder as Leyla Soykan Sayıcı and Levent Ülgen as İbrahim Soykan.

Aslan Leeuhart premiered on March 7, 2023 and concluded on January 30, 2024 on Show TV. The series consisted of 30 episodes each with a duration of 120 minutes (2 hours).

Later in the month, eMedia Investments' will be debuting a new romantic drama, Sout Van Die Aarde. The romantic drama stars Berk Atan and Gülsim Ali play the leading roles in this comedy drama.

Could Canal+'s MultiChoice Look To Expand Novelas TV's Operations To DStv?

As reported, MultiChoice will be axing TLNovelas after 5 years from their platforms by the end of January. They haven't given a reason to the sudden reason for the exclusion of the channel but several theories enter the mount.

Firstly, Canal+ has been slashing costs at MultiChoice and TLNovelas happens to be the first victim in this pursuit. Other cuts ranged from sporting events seen on SuperSport such as Philly Games and World Darts Championship.

Another theory to various DStv consumers is that the French broadcaster has plans to possibly possibly ramp up another TV channel, Novelas TV.

Novelas TV is the go to destination for French dubbed Latin American and Turkish telenovelas for consumers in France and Africa. A Polish version known as Novelas+ is being broadcast on Platforma Canal+ in Poland.

In technicality, it would be rivalling with both Telemundo and eExtra's existing offering on DStv.

MultiChoice had mentioned that they plan to enhance consumer's offering with more content and channels. To some, this could as well imply possibly reverting further content from TLNovelas onto Novelas TV or whatever the French prefers to call it.

It's less likely to be referred to as Novelas TV seeing as there's already one in Africa but rather Novelas+ as seen in Poland seeing as there's no overlap.

Novelas TV being a localised brand with both French and Polish audio could signal that a speculated feed will be in African languages.

KykNET has been distributing Afrikaans dubbed Turkish telenovelas like My Naam Is Farah and Kind Van Die Noodlot. Oddly enough, it had even been picked up by Maisha Magic which is based in East Africa so don't be surprised if that got slotted in.

Canal+ currently has a 37% stake in the Asian based streamer VIU and is looking to acquire majority stake. They've followed a similar route as Zee TV and KykNET with localised dubbing to international dramas again could be slotted in.

Teresa, Love Spell and the funnel of content viewed on TLNovelas again might as well garner some new life on Novelas TV.

January 2026 On Nick Jr. Across Europe And Africa | Returning Shows Including Dora And Tim Rex In Space

Nick Jr. is not skimping on premieres in January, and this channel is also entering a new phase for the domestic audience.

As you already know, both Nickelodeon and Nicktoons are undergoing major changes starting in January, as we are switching from the ad-supported version to becoming an ad-free channel. You know what that means: less time passes between individual programs, often only a promo or short filler is aired, which allows even more shows to be broadcast thanks to the freed-up airtime.

But let's get to the novelties. At the beginning of the month, Dora's final season continues, and the day after the series finale, a channel premiere takes its place. It's been more than a year since new episodes last aired, so it was high time for the final season of Sharkdog. The third season will air on weekday mornings, with afternoon repeats. Thanks to the global feed covering many countries across multiple continents, repeat slots are necessary so that every country can watch their favorite shows at a convenient local time. That's why all premiere times are listed in this article, although this may not necessarily continue in the future.

Finally, the January novelties conclude with the premieres of the second season of Tim Rex In Space. For this series, premieres will also be in the morning, repeated twice during the day and again early the next morning.

It should also be mentioned that with the new feed, the schedule changes in that Blaze and the Monster Machines returns to the regular lineup, while The Adventures of Paddington is removed.

Channel Premiere: Uhambo Coming This January To Star Khanya

Star Khanya, a general entertainment channel offering Zulu dubbed Bollywood dramas has announced the addition of a new series, Uhambo. This means "Travelling" or "The Journey" in Isizulu and is known in India as Sampoorna.

Synopsis for Uhambo 

Mitti, a devoted homemaker, is thrust into a crisis when Naina, a young woman who secretly loves Aakash, makes serious allegations against him, leading to his arrest. As a police investigation begins, led by Inspector Sattu, Mitti is forced to grapple with doubt and emotional turmoil. The narrative focuses on her journey to uncover the hidden truths behind the accusations and her struggle to fight for justice and reclaim her dignity amidst the public scandal. The show explores the complexities of trust and societal expectations as Mitti decides whether to stand by her husband or confront the unsettling reality of the situation. 

Based on the Bengali series Noshtoneer which dealt with sensitive themes like marital rape and a woman's fight to protect her sister-in-law from abuse, suggesting the Hindi adaptation also tackles weighty social issues. 

It starred Sandipta Sen as Mitti Kapoor Malhotra, Aham Sharma as Dr. Akash Malhotra, Vishal Aditya Singh as SI Satyendra "Sattu" Prasad Lohar and Riyaa Kapoor as Naina Singh in leading roles.

Uhambo premiered on StarPlus on 8 September 2025 and concluded on 9 December 2025 after 85 half hour episodes. The series is scheduled to air on Star Khanya from Mondays to Fridays at 8:30PM starting from 5th of January.

Channel Closure: TLNovelas Will Stop Airing On DStv And GOtv From 31 January 2026 Due To Canal+'s Cost Cutting At MultiChoice

MultiChoice in a statement:

We regularly review our channel line-up to ensure we offer customers the best in local and international content. This is done to ensure we deliver unbeatable content and that our DStv services cater for the needs and viewing requirements of our customers. As part of this ongoing process, some channels may be terminated. 

After Canal+ managed to forge an agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery for MultiChoice operations in Africa. A notice was sent out informing subscribers of TLNovelas's departure from DStv on 31 January 2026.

Not long ago, Paramount had claimed the lives of CBS Reality, CBS Justice, MTV Base and BET. Now consumers have to sayanara to TLNovelas which serves as the first victim in Canal+'s cost cutting.

TLNovelas was added to MultiChoice's DStv and GOtv platforms across Africa in September 2020 as a pop-up channel. StarTimes offered it as a permanent addition in a separate agreement when it launched in May 2020 - no longer available.

For DStv consumers, this was accompanied by two other pop-up channels, Timeless Dizi Channel and ZooMoo. Out of the three, MultiChoice had opted to keep only TLNovelas while removing ZooMoo and Timeless Dizi Channel. 

After five years, TLNovelas will take a bow on 31 January 2026 with Love To Death and It Had To Be You airing in double bill form. MultiChoice has no plans to replace the channel leaving Telemundo as the only other alternative on the platform.

Telemundo will be launching a new female led drama The Woman In Charge which serves as a reboot to Woman Of Steel. This will be followed by the romantic drama Love Of My Life in the month of February.
