SABC Vs. e.tv: MultiChoice's Attempt In Reducing The Competition

Earlier in the year, MultiChoice attempted to scrap eMedia's 4 channels eExtra, eToonz, eMovies and eMovies Extra currently packaged on the DStv platform which has proven to be unsuccessful as court rulings led to keep the channels for the remainder of 2022.

As some are already aware, MultiChoice had sort out several alternatives such as Movie Room and DreamWorks on top of building their offering through some of the existing brands residing on their platforms.

It's too soon to tell how consumers would react the moment these 4 channels eventually exit the pay-tv regime or in this case for MultiChoice as we got Openview+ rolling out in the coming year and as mentioned the necessary alternatives have been made available to DStv consumers.

But what I like to point out is the SABC, there was no media scrutiny around the public broadcaster as they do play a part in all this. An associate of MultiChoice had mentioned that 3 yet to be announced channels would make up for these channels.

Take into account, ICASA had put up a new ruling granting the public broadcaster rights to fund their 3 most watched and accessible channels in South Africa to pay-tv platforms for which they couldn't come to an agreement as yet following pending issues for which they plan to address publicly.

I don't want to give actual figures but what I can add is that the SABC and eMedia Investments had their part of the pie on DStv for which MultiChoice cutback for one party in order to compensate for the other for which the remaining party demands more despite already having a huge chunk of the pie.

SABC:
- SABC Movies: another scrapped channel by the public broadcaster
- Why Openview has been excluded from supposed SABC channel?
- Prediction: Mindset TV to be taken over by the SABC
- Prediction: Parliament TV to be taken over by the SABC
- TelkomOne transitions into SABC+ (review)
- SABC Children seemingly enters post production

Unlike eMedia Investments, the public broadcaster has a lot of original productions in the pipeline I'm not saying it's great as there's plenty of crap that isn't worth exploring but when you look at from a pay-tv perspective you can clearly see why SABC is a viable option.

eMedia can have Hawaii Five-O, Bob The Builder and Godzilla on for the 100th time all of which can be seen on various channels already residing on DStv while the SABC compliments that with Uzalo, Takalani Sesame and One Day Leader.

I'm not saying eMedia does a terrible job in selecting their content but it's something that is of no value to a operator like MultiChoice perhaps on a platform like Openview as there's not much alternatives to the above-mentioned content.

fliekNET to make a comeback this festive season

MultiChoice turns to the SABC in the hopes that they'll be able diversify their offering and limit the amount of repetition already viewable on the platform. When most already know that the channels will do exactly that with their own offering

Moonbug found more ways to keep the little ones entertained

Cameo, the marketplace that connects global talent with fans and brands, has launched Cameo Kids — offering personalized videos for children from their family entertainment favorites. At launch, Cameo Kids features a host of animated characters including the stars of Moonbug’s most popular global kids’ franchises, Blippi and CoComelon.

Cameo Kids allows consumers to book personalized videos built around key moments — from birthdays and the holidays to daily routines like bedtime and general messages of love and encouragement. In the coming months, the product experience will expand to add even more seasonal holidays, daily routines and new milestones.

“We’ve seen jaw-dropping fan reactions to Cameo videos over the last few years including truly wowed children, so we’re excited to spread even more of that joy with this new offering,” said Steven Galanis, Cameo Co-Founder and CEO. “Candle Media and Moonbug helped bring this to life by partnering with us to launch some of the biggest names in children’s entertainment and create endless possibilities for new characters and creative product use cases. We’re building a platform where families can get their kid’s favorite star to not just know their name, but share support for every important moment in their child’s life – big and small.”

Reminder: eExtra To Undergo Some Changes Amidst The Festive Season

eExtra, a South African free-to-air entertainment channel which is home to various international telenovelas which have proven to be a powerhouse in terms of performance is scheduled to make some minor changes in the coming weeks.

As seen this past week, eExtra uploads the costume based drama The Rebel Princess in place of Twice My Son-In-Law when it concludes week's prior. Accompanying the new series will be a rebroadcast of their first Asian drama, Ice Adonis.

eExtra's Indian offering which was basically being branded as Zee World's leftovers for Twist Of Fate and Kindred Hearts will now start at 14:00. The only difference viewers won't have 16:45 on top of that Blue Venom Girl is back as a double bill alongside Twist Of Fate.

The history of Star Life

From 19 December expect the above-mentioned changes to take effect and for the Zee World block to be isolated on weekdays. Although there's no mention as to why it was altered I have a couple of guesses that make it all the more convincing for fans.

Firstly, Kuiertyd is what builds the channel's audience at this point as seen with Doodsondes on e.tv which accumulates close to 2 million while 7de Laan on SABC 2 can pull almost half of Doodsondes audiences.

The second has to do with the timeslots, India and Turkey get a fair share of the spotlight while other content such as the Asian dramas are left to rot with the only repeats to occur when some audiences aren't up yet basically 5:00.

The last option is more connected to item number 2 - competition. I don't get why eExtra had to include Zee TV's programming if the parent company were to run to the same people for a dedicated channel.

But if I had to recall eMedia's history with Bollywood I wouldn't say they were at the worst but it certainly wasn't the strongest parts of the brand. If eBella taught anyone anything was that they're better off playing second fiddle to Zee One than trying to reel their viewers.

This new schedule makes a lot more sense I feel eExtra has a winning chance outside of Zee TV. There's plenty of content in which MultiChoice and StarSat lack or don't have a lot of including but not limited to Mozambican, Pakistani and Brazilian.
