Cartoon Network Orders It's First African Superhero Series

Cartoon Network Africa has greenlit Garbage Boy and Trash Can, its first-ever domestic superhero series.

Created by Nigerian animator Ridwan Moshood, the 10 x 2.5-minute comedy-driven toon is about a boy with imaginary superpowers who fights for justice with his trusty sidekick. Moshood was inspired to create the series by his experience being bullied in school.

Set to premiere in 2022, Garbage Boy and Trash Can is in production at South African studio Pure Garbage, which Moshood co-founded last summer with Mike de Seve (head of New York-based Baboon Animation) and Nick Wilson (founder of the African Animation Network in Johannesburg). Pure Garbage also provides critical training and jobs for emerging African talent.

“I’ve seen a lot of talented African creators with amazing projects that should be on TV right now,” says Moshood. “Our production and company will be a big boost for the industry.”

John Fountain—director of The Fairly OddParents—is serving as supervising director on Garbage Boy and Trash Can, with Moshood co-directing and de Seve executive producing for Pure Garbage.

Moshood’s concept for the series won Cartoon Network Africa’s inaugural Creative Lab competition in 2018, and was then made into a short pilot that premiered on CN and its digital platforms last year. Creative Lab was set up to address a skills gap in the region’s animation industry by providing new opportunities for African creators, writers, graphic artists and animation students.

Moshood says he taught himself how to animate because there weren’t many affordable animation schools in Nigeria he could apply to.

“I learned by watching Cartoon Network classics on TV and doing tutorials on YouTube,” says Moshood. “I didn’t even have a laptop to practice with; I had to use cyber-cafés in Lagos.”

Though Garbage Boy and Trash Can is Pure Garbage’s main focus right now, Moshood has a number of other superhero concepts for kids in development, as well as a girl-led series called Alice from Above.

Africa has been a hotbed for animated content lately as broadcasters, streamers and production companies all work to meet a growing global demand for more inclusive kids and family content. Netflix is currently co-producing its first African animated original series, Mama K’s Team 4, with South Africa’s Triggerfish Animation. And Disney+ has also partnered with Triggerfish on Kiya, its preschool co-pro with eOne.

Disney+ Picks Up Triggerfish/eOne Co-Pro

Disney+, Disney Junior and France Télévisions have picked up a new CG-animated preschool series co-produced by South Africa’s Triggerfish Animation (pictured) and Hasbro’s eOne.

Kiya is a 52 x 11-minute series about a group of seven-year-old African girls whose magical headbands turn them into superheroes. The original idea from Triggerfish (Mama K’s Team 4) was developed for television by eOne and France’s Frog Box.

Triggerfish, eOne and Frogbox are producing the series in partnership with Disney Junior and France Télévisions, with French studio TeamTO providing animation services. eOne previously worked with Frog Box and TeamTO on its preschool series PJ Masks, which was recently added to Disney+ in the UK.

Kiya is expected to bow in 2023 on Disney Junior and Disney+ globally, as well as on France Télévisions. Plans are also in place to create YouTube content, music, apps, audio, toys and other consumer products based on the IP.

Netflix Collabs On Its First African Animated Original

Netflix has signed a deal to collaborate with South Africa’s Triggerfish Animation Studios and UK distributor CAKE on animated action-comedy series Mama K’s Team 4 (pictured).

Set in Zambia and aimed at six- to 11-year-olds, Mama K’s Team 4 reinforces the notion that anyone can be a superhero, with its story line centering on a group of teenage girls who are recruited by a former secret agent to help save the world. It’s created by Zambian writer Malenga Mulendema and designed by Cameroonian artist Malcolm Wope, who took inspiration from ’90s R&B and hip hop girl groups.

The series, which is Netflix’s first African animated global original, has been in development as a 25 x 22-minute 2D-animated project since September 2017. Its launch date has yet to be announced.

From a creative perspective, Netflix is partnering with Triggerfish (Adventures in Zambezia) and CAKE on a continent-wide search to hire black female writers for the show. Their mandate is to find candidates who have had their work produced for either TV or film, and who are English-speaking African citizens or permanent residents.

Newzroom Afrika Launches Initiative With 1KZN TV & Mpuma Kapa TV

In an effort to continue transforming and developing the media and broadcast landscape, Newzroom Afrika has entered into an agreement with two of South Africa’s regional TV stations, 1KZN TV and Mpuma Kapa TV.

Newzroom Afrika’s national and continental positioning will assist in providing both channels with a much greater audience reach. In addition to this, the 24-hour TV news channel will provide 1KZN TV and Mpuma Kapa TV with editorial training and mentorship. On the commercial front, the two channels will also produce exclusive content and news services for Newzroom Afrika.

“Our vision to be Africa’s leading, credible news and information service will continue to be reflected in this new initiative. Supporting regional channels is a key portion of our overall strategy, which sees us delivering world-class offerings at every touchpoint,” says Thabile Ngwato, Chief Executive Officer at Newzroom Afrika.

To support this initiative, MultiChoice has given 1KZN TV and Mpuma Kapa TV each a grant to improve their news coverage capability and establish news bureaus in the respective provinces. These grants will cover production equipment such as cameras, lighting, sound and computers, as well as training and technical support.

“In its quest to provide an authentic voice to the people of KwaZulu-Natal, 1KZN TV has been wanting to expand its news coverage. This partnership – made possible by MultiChoice – will enable us to do just that, whilst also building our capacity through professional training and assistance,” said Edwin Mncwango, Chief Executive Officer at 1KZN TV.

“Mpuma Kapa TV is excited to be part of this new venture, as we open up the Eastern Cape to the country and continent. As the leading broadcaster in the province, our news bureau can now open opportunities to train and shape a new generation of journalists and news reporters from the Eastern Cape,” says Motse Mfuleni, Chairperson of the Board at Mpuma Kapa TV.

1KZN TV and Mpuma Kapa TV will be able to offer live coverage of breaking news from rural areas, participate in interviews through studio-to-studio live feeds, and even package news inserts. This will bring in much needed new revenue streams to further enhance their news coverage capability.

“Regional TV stations are the lifeline for news and stories in their communities. We are committed to supporting and enabling them to improve the quality of broadcasting at grassroots level. Their partnerships with Newzroom Afrika will elevate local news to a national stage. Our hyperlocal strategy is about growing and telling local stories and through this initiative, we are seeing it in action,” says Nyiko Shiburi, MultiChoice South Africa .

1st July 2021 @ 6.30pm
Join us in celebrating a profession that drives the economy and flies the African flag.

A guide is critically important to a traveller’s experience when on a safari holiday in Africa. A personable and informed guide can make or break the experience for so many. However a field guides career is not perceived by the world as a “serious”career and is largely considered as a fun job with a short lifespan.
Not enough credit is given to the professionals that have constantly experienced life-changing ordeals in a dangerous environment.
This is no holiday job, it’s a profession that drives our economy and flies our beautiful country’s flag higher than most, and it’s time to give the guidesthat bring so much happiness to so many people and so much credibility to our country properrecognition.
Safari Guide of the Year is an annual event which creates awareness for these men and women who dedicate their lives to tourism and wildlife. This one hour show will be an insiders look into this prestigious event and the skills needed to be the best safari guide in the country.

A Pop Of Colour

July is the heart of winter here in Africa. The Wild Earth Safari Guides are wrapped up warm due to the freezing cold mornings and nights. The landscape has turned into a 'sea' of tawny coloured bush, with brown twigs and sticks as faras the eye can see.
However, there are a few pops of colour. The aloes will be in flower and with them the sunbirds and a few insects that thrive on the lifeline that the flowers bring. In July we are able to see the first long-tailed cassia and tree wisteria flowering toward the end of the month. These herald the knob thorn and weeping boer bean flowers and with them the onset of spring again.

An Elephant Party

July sees large gatherings of elephants in the riverbeds at Ngala. This incredible spectacle is a direct result of the fact that it is winter and thewater is sparse in the bush.
Kruger National Park used to be fenced off from other reserves that exist around it. Because of this the vegetation was protected and very well established due to the fact that the elephants could not roam freely between reserves.
Once the fences were removed the elephants were ableto move freely across a very large area. Every year as the dry season (winter) hits, the elephants move further west towards Ngala as it has available water.
Ngala has a river running through it and although the riverbeds are dry in winter there is still a high water table in the river bed. The lush vegetation provides a surplus of food during these dry months and it results in multiple herds gathering together.

Activity at the Hyena Den

The Pridelands Clan of Hyena have just started toden in the area where Wild Earth films. Robin is the matriarch of the Clan and she rules with aniron fist. It is very obvious when she is at the den that she is in charge. Many of the subordinate females fear her and are extremely submissive when she is around.
There are three cubs at the den and they range between seven and ten months old.. The eldest cub is a girl and her name is Ndzala. The youngest cub is also female, she is called Sparky and the middle cub is a male and he is Melo. These cubsall have different mothers but are best of friends and can often be seen playing at the den.
