Universal TV Vs. BBC Brit: The Home Of Premium Entertainment

Universal and BBC Brit are international general entertainment channel respectively owned by US based company NBCUniversal and UK based company BBC Studios. These happen to be one of the few premium entertainment channels left globally as streaming has taken a toll with how content is viewed.

Universal is an action, adventure and crime based channel which is home to cop dramas such as Chicago PD and NCIS: Los Angeles, medical shows like Transplant and Chicago Med and finally mystery and supernatural dramas like Departure and Fantasy Island.

BBC Brit adapts to a similar form as Universal as they too offer dramas such as EastEnders and William Shakespeare. But the channel doesn't consider itself Universal exclusive as there's other content like The Graham Norton Show, Total Wipeout and Top Gear.

One of the things I think most people won't like about Universal is the amount of rehashed content that various local providers air first-hand. I mean I don't mind a little nostalgia every now and then I mean they got Bones and Rizzoli And Isles but these rebroadcasts get a bit annoying.

When it comes to BBC Brit, I'd say a lot of channels need to be done. I mean it's more like Universal on the repetitive side but imagine watching the same season of Top Gear repeatedly on top of that having 3 shows take up most of the schedule.

Not long ago, BBC First was shelved with BBC Brit having to pull the muscle I mean come on 2 hours of primetime with 2 hours of repeats during the day but Top Gear gets more than that on a daily basis.

If you're looking for top notch entertainment head on down to Universal sure you won't get Graham Norton or Planet Earth but you sure won't have a lineup that is as repetitive as a certain kids brand I prefer leaving unnamed.

BBC Brit is a waste but the channel has its own perks that some have to grasp for the time being I mean there's BritBox or BBC iPlayer but to those without these services have to view the bulk of content on this channel which appears as an absolute disaster.

Kelly Clarkson is coming to S3

A few years ago, the public broadcaster cancelled The Real Talk With Anele since then S3 has been funneling the schedule with rebroadcasts. As seen in their showcase, the SABC transitioned to video entertainment and is looking to reinventing their offering.

As such the team acquired the talk show The Kelly Clarkson Show where the singer brings her gift of connection to a fun and funny hour each weekday, offering heartwarming stories, live musical performances, games and surprises.

M-Net acquired the show when it broadcast in 2018 and offered an open window to other consumers but didn't bother to give consumers a chance to view the Emmy Award winner now leaving consumers to flee to SABC 3 by January 2023.

The show is currently streaming on NBCUniversal's Peacock which still hasn't been made available in South Africa and the rest of Africa but the DStv friendly version of the service Universal+ launched a while back.

As seen with Paramount+ and HBO Max, several content have been made for available for linear viewing and questions amount to how Till Jail Do Us Apart would rollout on a brand like Telemundo or pass down to Universal since it's more short form.

Hallmark Channel Possibly Making A Comeback To Africa As Peacock Becomes Official Home To All Its Content

Peacock has closed a pact with Hallmark Media to stream live and on-demand programming from Hallmark Channel, Hallmark Movies & Mysteries and Hallmark Drama. It’s a first-of-its-kind linear plus SVOD deal for the network.

Hallmark Channel was once available in Africa and across the world but following it's acquisition by NBCUniversal the feed was replaced by Universal TV, Studio Universal, 13th Street Universal and Diva Universal.

Now Hallmark has a hub on Peacock’s home page which features live simulcasts of all three channels with current-season programming available live and on-demand next day as well as a library of movies within the Hallmark library, which includes holiday titles.

“As we continue to make Peacock a premium streaming destination, Hallmark is exactly the type of brand we want to align with,” said Kelly Campbell, President of Peacock, and Direct-to-Consumer, NBCUniversal, in a statement. “Through this groundbreaking partnership, we’re giving Hallmark viewers a unique viewing experience while continuing to grow our audience, boosting engagement across both brands.”

“We’re proud to enter this partnership with Peacock and bring our widely beloved Hallmark content to their subscribers,” said Wonya Lucas, President and CEO, Hallmark Media. “The opportunity to provide our devoted fanbase access to all three of Hallmark’s linear networks will allow our audience to continue to grow and connect in meaningful ways.”

In addition to the live Hallmark channels, Peacock subscribers will have access to Hallmark content on demand, including live and next-day access to series such as When Calls the Heart, as well as the new series Ride and The Way Home coming in 2023. The hub will also include a VOD collection containing new premiere movies and Hallmark movie classics as part of a Peacock Premium subscription.

Alternatives To e.tv's Defunct International Offering At 20:30

Since April 2022, e.tv halted distribution of weeknight international series at 20:30 in an attempt to bolster their streaming endeavours with the likes of Disney+, Netflix and Showmax all following a similar pattern.

While e.tv's new offering has seen somewhat of success, there's still various consumers that feel excluded from this shakeup having no means opted to create some distance with the channel and explore the number of alternatives out there.

It's obvious the streamers mentioned above would make a suitable candidate to this offering but as some households struggle to get the necessary means it's best to just look at alternatives that despite being phased out are still reachable to this day.

I managed to find a list of alternatives which I thought of dividing between pay and free as there's some that are willing to the freshest shows at a cheaper price or wait a while longer to view some of this content.

Now a look at the pay-tv alternatives

1. M-Net is a premium entertainment channel home to the very best and latest international series. While e.tv used to give you 3-5 year old repeats to their offering with M-Net you can several of their upcoming projects like Chicago Fire, Seal Team, New Amsterdam and NCIS: Los Angeles.

The biggest downfall to the brand is obvious pricing which is almost close to a R1000 monthly on DStv Premium that brings in item number 2.

2. Me is catch-up channel to M-Net infused with a bit of 1Magic. The only issue with the channel is the rollout of some of the content formerly and currently on e.tv. You have Queen Sugar airing on Sundays and stuff like Chicago PD can air as early as 17:00 while e.tv used to give you that 3 hours later. But again it can be useful and make e.tv feel like they're repeating their shows 2 or 3 years later.

Best part this is all available for as little as R309p/m on DStv Family formerly R420 on DStv Compact when it was M-Net City.

3. Universal, if you've viewed e.tv's 20:30 slot that's basically what the channel is about. You had variations like Rizzoli and Isles, Bones and Leverage Redemption but the lot winds up being e.tv's lineup. You have the latest seasons of NCIS: Los Angeles and The Librarians and you find them catching up with the Chicago franchise and S.W.A.T.

In the end, Universal has more value with e.tv opting to cancel these shows from their lineup and is far better than option number 2 and valued at the same amount as them.

Now a look at the free-to-view alternatives

1. SABC 3, stylised as S3 is currently a must have for those on pay platforms following the loss of several premium International channels like Sundance TV and FOX. Viewers on those platforms like to browse shows like Kim's Convenience, Killing Eve and Narcos. Although most of it is repeats they're not following the same pattern as e.tv as the content can be outdated or probably never before seen on the pay alternatives. The disadvantage is that viewers would probably want Chicago PD and all S3 would do is air NCIS.

The channel is accessible anywhere just don't use an aerial as those will be thrown in the recycle bin.

2. eXposed

Although the lineup of shows are dead, eXposed is the reruns graveyard to the international offering. You find stuff like Empire, Shades Of Blue, Hawaii Five-O and even Blackish. Compared to all others this could be the new home of 20:30 or the reincarnate.

Downfall of Xposed is the resumes at 8am not everyone will be around to binge whatever content comes onto the channel which is why one would need the extra 7 hours. The channel is available on Openview.

DreamWorks Jr. launching new series

Amidst the launch on DStv, DreamWorks Channel unveiled a bunch of content that wasn't part of the channel's lineup as seen during its run on StarTimes. The series follows Dak and Leyla, human twins raised by dragons who have developed, as a result, a unique ability to directly communicate with them, helping and rescuing dragons and the people of the town Huttsgalor.

Streaming: What Will Happen To NBCUniversal Linear Channels Currently Seen On DStv, Starsat And StarTimes?

NBCUniversal International (in Africa) supplies channels such as Universal TV, Studio Universal, DreamWorks Channel, Telemundo and E!

The restructuring of the TV and streaming business of Comcast's NBCUniversal featured prominently on the company's third-quarter earnings conference call on Thursday.

"In essence, we have done away with the concept of creating a piece of work for a specific network," Comcast chairman and CEO Brian Roberts said.

NBCU recently rejigged and streamlined key parts of its operations to cut costs and update structures for the digital age. A recently launched TV and Streaming unit, which combined those businesses under Mark Lazarus, was part of a restructuring designed to shift resources and investment from linear to streaming, but also causing job cuts. On Thursday, Roberts explained the move this way: "In essence, we have done away with the concept of creating a piece of work for a specific network."

Management showed a slide saying the move would drive “long-term value.” It showed the old structure as being “fragmented, with individual network executive teams” and optimizing "specific networks and brands.” The new structure "optimizes [the] full portfolio of linear and digital outlets" and is "centralized, with small programming executive teams."

NBCU CEO Jeff Shell during the third-quarter earnings conference call said the costs for the restructuring are hitting over the course of about a year, with a third "in this current quarter" and most of it having hit by midyear 2021, which will lead to "a lot less cost" and position the company for future opportunities. "We are kind of through the execution of most of our restructuring," he said, adding that the changing world and industry, including revenue pressures, mean a need for reform to ensure long-term profitability and health.

Comcast CFO Mike Cavanagh on the call detailed restructuring charges taken this year. He said "COVID-related severance and restructuring charges" year-to-date have reached $239 million. "We expect to incur an additional charge that is approximately double this amount in this year’s fourth quarter as we continue to align the cost structure across all of our businesses," he added. That would mean around $478 million in the quarter and around $717 million for the whole year.

Shell also said the advertising upfront ended up being much smaller than in the past, but "much better" than expected for the company, with pricing slightly higher, instead of the expected decline, and ad volume being down slightly.

Cavanagh on Thursday's call also predicted that the theme parks unit, which posted a third-quarter loss just like in the previous quarter, would break even again some time in 2021 no matter what happens to Universal Studios Hollywood. Roberts said the division has seen "the most pressure" from the coronavirus pandemic and it will take some time to recover, but management remains "very bullish" on theme parks longer-term. He also highlighted that excluding theme parks losses, NBCU's earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization would have grown 9 percent in the third quarter.

The topic of premium VOD and theatrical film releases, which has been a key issue on recent Comcast earnings calls, only came up in passing on Thursday. Cavanagh mentioned that NBCU's film team plans to release The Croods: A New Age in theaters and on PVOD in the fourth quarter, while other movies have been pushed to 2021.

Shell previously addressed Universal Pictures' historic agreement with cinema giant AMC Theatres, which will allow the studio's movies to be made available on premium video-on-demand after just 17 days of play in cinemas, including three weekends. The deal, which initially covers AMC's U.S. locations, shatters the traditional theatrical window of nearly three months before studios can make movies available in the home. AMC, the world's largest theater chain, is expected to share in the revenue from PVOD. "Together we can build a new, more attractive business model for us both," Shell said this summer. He also signaled Universal was expecting to reach similar deals with other exhibitors.

Shell also said back then that in recent years it has become "increasingly more difficult" to get the same returns on movies over the first two windows, with the AMC deal helping the studio and the exhibitor on that front.

Conclusion: This affects mostly E! since it was the only channel fitting that description while the rest have just been relying on acquisitions and archived shows. Telemundo in the U.S. is not managed by Comcast while NBCUniversal here manages it so my guess would be that E! and Telemundo will merge into a single channel which would be similar to the defunct FOX Life channel:
1. Since NBCUniversal is on a cancelling spree, E! joined Telemundo on a reruns rampage.
2.1. Telemundo lineup gets weaker on a yearly basis as more repeats begin to fill up the channel. They use to provide 4 hours of fresh content now that's dropped by 3 hours with only an hour repeating during the daytime. By next year, they're very likely going to offer 2 hours of fresh content which is okay since it gives viewers time to watch other stations.
2.2. E! will look more like BET, FOX and Comedy Central which can only provide an hour or more of fresh content per week.
3. E! has been heavily reliant on The Kardashians to boost their airtime now that their chapter is coming to an end what's left for the channel besides Botched! which is likely getting canned or moving to streaming services.
