NBA Moves From e.tv To SABC Sport With An Expanded Lineup: More Reasons To Believe eMedia Is Slowly Doing Away With The News & Sports Channel

The South African Broadcasting Corporation through SABC Sport is pleased to announce an exciting multiyear television broadcast rights agreement with the National Basketball Association (NBA). As part of the partnership, SABC Sport will air more than 35 games throughout the season, including a Christmas game, NBA All-star Saturday Night, Conference Finals and The Finals, broadcast live or delayed, on SABC 1 and The SABC Sport Channel on DTT, TelkomOne and Openview. In addition the SABC will host a weekly magazine show "NBA Action" which covers the league's news and highlights.

The first live broadcast will kick off with a pre-game live studio presentation at 22:30 on Saturday, 30 October. Followed by the inaugural live broadcast of the 75th Anniversary Season where the Washington Wizards will host the Boston Celtics.

Due to time difference between South Africa and the United States, the live or delayed broadcasts will start between 20:00 and midnight on the same Saturday on SABC 1 and The Sport Channel.

e.tv once held rights to NBA for several years and often used News & Sport for reruns and highlights before it sudden departure from their stable.

Since the launch of SABC Sport, Openview has been creating more hype for the channel which led to speculation that News and Sport would soon be reduced to ashes.

As seen above, it looks like the SABC will be leveraging content from the News and Sport channel as eMedia seems to be diverting their focus away from sports. Not long ago, the channel stopped broadcasting La Liga.

Impact Wrestling Ain't Changing Houses

Amidst their possible exit from sport, Impact Wrestling has been added onto eVOD so it seems probable that sports may not be wiped out entirely or at not wrestling.

Over the years, wrestling has been viewed not only as a sport but general entertainment. Unlike other sports, wrestling resorts to storylines and gives each wrestler a persona to start rivalries and get viewers pumped for the action.

WWE could have some involvement with Impact's freedom from execution seeing that it once aired on e.tv as indicated below:

"Africa has always been a strong market for IMPACT Wrestling, where our passionate fans continue to engage with our content on multiple platforms,” said Ed Nordholm, Chief Corporate Officer of Anthem Sports & Entertainment and president of IMPACT Wrestling. “We are thrilled to bring professional wrestling back to e.tv, where the sport has a long history and track record of success.”

“e.tv is proud to be the home of Impact Wrestling across Sub-Saharan Africa. We received enormous traction from having aired wrestling (WWE) on our channels a few years ago, and it is only befitting that we bring back content that highly resonates with our audience. We hope to build the IMPACT Wrestling brand on our multi-channel platforms for many years to come,” added Marlon Davids, MD, echannels.

In future, we could actually see the content be transmitted on e.tv and especially eExtra now that the whole streamlining has reduced the reruns on the channel.

THE INDIANS ARE COMING, THE INDIANS ARE COMING!!! As Zee Enterprises Launches Additional Channels To StarTimes, Openview And MultiChoice's DStv

Earlier in the month, it was announced through several media outlets that WION would make their way to DStv later this month which might have been pushed to November.

Not only that Zee Cinema which is currently available on StarTimes might make their way to the pay-tv giant as they've seemingly started testing out the channel.

Amidst the losses of several international channels part of it due to the rise in streaming. MultiChoice has been investing in more African production to fill that gap while StarTimes hasn't done much throughout the year or at least not until now.

According to sources, StarTimes is set to add three channels Zee TV, Zee One and Zee Tamil from Zee Enterprises which will likely anger some consumers seeing that they already have an extensive lineup of Bollywood entertainment not to mention these channels don't offer anything similar to the channels lost.

Zee TV which is currently available on DStv serves as a Hindi entertainment channel offering a variety of series and movies while Zee Tamil is like the main channel except in another language with its own programming.

Zee One which is very likely adapted from the German counterpart copied Zee World and dubbed their programming. My guess would be the revived version will cater for English viewers which would serve as a rival to Zee World on DStv seeing that it will likely come as a repeats channel.

Basically, MultiChoice and StarTimes are introducing three different channels (as mentioned) while one platform has all theirs coming from India the other adds Me as an accessory in this Indian extravaganza.

Zee One will also be added to Openview despite having eExtra having content from the channel which leads to the question on what is gonna happen to the content on there.

Updated: Utsav Next Target Could Be The Star Channels Currently On DStv, StarSat, Zuku TV And Openview + Disney Channel And Disney Junior Could Go Off Air Sooner Than Expected As Disney Shifts Its Focus Towards Streaming

Later this week, Disney and Star in India announced that they would exit from the English general entertainment industry which resulted in the termination of most of their channels with Hindi channels taking their spot.

The Walt Disney Company revealed plans to close 100 international Disney channels before the FY22 with more Disney Channels expected to close in Europe as streaming looks to be the brands top priority.

The likely reason for Star's demise is due to Disney+ since The Walt Disney Company took the Star branding for their streaming service so Star India keeping it for English viewers would only cause confusion.

Earlier this year, the UK & Europe rebranded their Star channels to Utsav with the changes applicable to viewers of those regions. Of course, there's several signs that the branding will be duplicated in more countries.

Vijay TV is the only channel internationally to use that adapt to that branding and Star India is seemingly testing out the Utsav branding through the StarPlus and Star Gold channel in Africa.

Star Life being the only English channel in Africa will have to create some distance from Star India or join the party seeing that they're exiting the audience it's catered for.

The European counterpart manages the Star channels in Africa so it seems logical for the Utsav branding to enter the region the question would have to be why delay the switch, could Star Life have some involvement perhaps?

The Disney Africa Facebook page stopped promoting content from Disney Channel and moved it to the Disney Africa Channels page (formerly Disney Junior Africa) with the main page likely to be used as a portal to promote Disney+.

The UK, Asia, Italy and Australia already lost Disney Channel and Disney Junior so it doesn't seem far fetched to think the same fate awaits the Disney Channels in Africa.

The Walt Disney Company is set out to be another Netflix. Even if that means cutting the cord of several channels in markets where cable is dominating the circuit.

In November, Disney Channel and Disney Junior have seemingly hit the reruns button with the main channel airing reruns of Gigantosaurus.
