The hashtag #BringBackChannel198 started trending on Monday on social media after MultiChoice took away the unencoded Big Brother pop-up channel from DStv Family and DStv Access subscribers who were given access to the channel since the 5th season of the localised Banijay format reality show started on 23 January.

Big Brother Mzansi as a pop-up channel with daily and weekly highlights on the Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) channel and is now only available to DStv Premium, DStv Compact Plus and DStv Compact subscribers.

"From the onset, we communicated that Big Brother Mzansi would be available exclusively on DStv Compact, DStv Compact Plus and DStv Premium," MultiChoice told Channel24 in response to a media query.

In line with accepted business practice, and as we have done for select content in the past, we opened up channel 198 to all our customers in Southern Africa to allow for sampling of the content for a limited period.

Many DStv subscribers didn't get that message and are upset that they've now been blocked from continuing to watch the Big Brother Mzansi content they've had access to.

Here's some possible outcomes:

- MultiChoice will host another open window close to the end of the season.

- MultiChoice will offer an open time similar to M-Net's 6pm timeslot.

- MultiChoice rebroadcasts the pop-up channel immediately after the first season ends perhaps blocking Compact to Premium customers.

- MultiChoice relaunches a dedicated channel for Big Brother (also known as MagicWorld) I mean there's still an BBN and if possible Housemates Liberia (formerly Big Brother Liberia).

- MultiChoice does nothing and face the crowd head on.

Free State Will Probably Be Fortunate To Get A TV Channel Running By 2025

Free State TV (FSTV) was founded by community media activists in 2008, following the release of regulations governing the community television sector in South Africa by the broadcasting regulator, ICASA. These activists formed the Free State Community Television Station (FSCTS), which consisted of a grouping of organisations working in the field of community media.

The station engaged in a process of ongoing discussions aimed at creating a community television channel for Free State, based on principles of social development, democracy, justice and human rights. Consultations were held with other civil society organisations and the wider public, which resulted in the organisation being formally launched at its first AGM in July 2017. This was attended by over 50 representatives from the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) in Welkom.

The organisation first approached the national public service broadcasters, the government, and the commercial service broadcasters for a programming 'window' which would be viewed only in the Free State regions. This approach was rejected and the organisation then decided to stage its own broadcast in social media.

Up to this time, the only community TV broadcasts which had been allowed in South Africa were temporary broadcasts of up to four weeks in duration, which were linked to "special event" licenses.

ICASA began issuing longer "temporary" licenses of up to one year in 2007, when it licensed Soweto TV in Johannesburg for a 12-month period July of that year. Consequently, the FSCTS decided to also pursue a one-year license because this would provide a firmer foundation for a permanent community television channel. Application for such license where made in 2017 but placed on hold and promised will be granted after the migration of analogue to digital system is complete by ICASA, although the channel is only able to launch in 16 June 2025.

The channel will began its broadcasting with one hour of programming, which will be repeated throughout the day for a two-week period. Thereafter programme hours will steadily increases until the channel is able to do its broadcasting 24 hours per day, although many programmes will be repeated due to a shortage of available content.

The channel does not have a budget for content acquisition, so all programmes are acquired free of charge from individuals, production houses, organisations and government agencies.

FSTV CEO, Dilano Lebajoa, says the channel will cover 85% of neighbourhoods in Free State province. Broadcasting will be on a digital frequency as an independent channel aimed distribution from a hired Sentech Ltd. transmitter. The main focus will be on issues affecting residents in the province.

Possible terminations and additions on DStv

"There are a number of issues affecting local communities and we hope to take them up with the municipalities. We did intensive research and identified that are structures we can work with to strengthen the provincial economy".

Why work with FS TV - Channel?

While FSTV has conditional broadcasting rights, producers retain all or a percentage of their IP rights. You won’t get that deal on mainstream TV. Producers are given access to airtime and independently verified viewership numbers which can be leveraged to monetise their shows on a revenue-share basis. You won’t get that opportunity on YouTube unless you have an enormous reach.

Producers can sell the sponsorship rights in their shows as well as a number of advertising spots inside and outside their programmes. You get support from FSTV’s sales department and you get access to other giant media sales house who will present your show to ad agencies.

FSTV will provide access to studio facilities and additional technical support.

FSTV will also partner with producers to market their shows and the channel as a whole.

Why, you might ask yourself, is FSTV offering such a great deal?

Because we are striving to be licensed as a non-profit, community television channel aimed to serve you and the needs of others! South Africa’s Constitution recognises that communication is a democratic right and guarantees you freedom of expression. Are you convinced yet?

Programming on FSTV

The channel has developed innovative programming practices that incentivise and support local producers to produce, distribute and monetise content that meets the needs of the audience we serve through a bottom-up approach.

Contribution types:

Established independent producers with capacity to produce their own shows,
Emerging producers or individuals with subject-matter expertise who wish to access FSTV’s resources to produce shows.

Hyper-local community TV initiatives serving the needs of localised audiences.
NGOs wishing to develop education and advocacy programmes.

Producers serving the needs of specific interest groups such as women and sport.
Free State TV takes four kinds of programme content such as acquired content, independent productions, co-productions and music videos.

Case Closed Is Back By Popular Demand On Telemundo Africa, Saloni And East Meets West Coming Soon To SABC 2 And eVOD Makes Some Minor Adjustments

Miss Polo is back on Telemundo

As seen this past week, Telemundo silently ripped the Emmy nominated series Case Closed from its primetime offering for more repeats and this time it's known other than the series, Decisions.

The series first aired on the channel back in 2019 and since then became the most repeated program on Telemundo surpassing it's festive counterpart Christmas Miracles as the channel has a tendency of using the show as a plot filler to new content.

Now Case Closed will undergo the same treatment this time for 100 Days To Fall In Love which ends 14 February leaving Miss Polo to keep viewers at ease for the next 6 days as the channel introduces Nurses.

The Indians are coming to SABC 2

According to sources, SABC 2 will re-enter the world of Bollywood after a decade with two newly furnished soaps formerly seen on the channel alongside Zee World, Saloni and East Meets West (Saath Saath).

Based on the lives of two grandsons of a Punjabi family (the Singh's) from Delhi, who marry girls who are culturally and geographically poles apart from each other. One hails from a small town in Punjab while the other is an NRI who has been brought up across the seven seas. The story takes many turns, romantic, emotional, dramatic and purely funny when the two girls start living under the same roof in East Meets West.

Saloni, who despite being dark-skinned, sets out to prove that it doesn't matter what skin colour you might be. She marries Nahar and begins her journey fulfilling the seven rounds she took at her marriage. Saloni faces many problems, particularly, discrimination for her skin colour. However she is talented and sets out on a journey, to create an identity for herself.

The series are said to follow The Heir on eExtra which include the English audio formerly seen on Zee World and currently available on Zee One.

Here's a list of updates about eVOD

Following the end of the free eVOD data promotion with MTN, the platform underwent some minor changes.

- Afrikaans Premium was shortened to Afrikaans.
- The Heir currently seen on eExtra has been added onto the platform.
- The eOriginals section has been updated to include the eVOD productions.

Cartoon Network Africa Might Be Getting A Preschool Block And What Fate Possibly Awaits Boomerang Africa If Cartoonito Choose To Launch As A Block?

Oh, oh, oh Cartoon Network

Last month, there was a string of announcements regarding Cartoonito one of which included it's return to Boomerang with Cartoon Network serving as an additional home making it a double whammy.

The reasons for Cartoon Network is justified as stated last year they want to create content that resonates with preschoolers, families and girls so the idea of Cartoonito surfacing on Cartoon Network as doesn't seem far fetched.

2022 on Disney+ ahead of launch in South Africa

Most markets already package the brand on the channel other than that the originals are being produced by CN Studios. On the bright side it doesn't get as much time as seen in the United States you usually get an hour or two of preschool as the rest is on Boomerang.

- Could fan made Cartoon Network logo be the future logo for the channel?

Likelihood is that the same will occur in Africa which is probably for the best as Boomerang has been labelled as a premium tier in some regions while the other has to do with CN's focus on Teen Titans GO!.

Cartoonito returns but as what exactly?

In Europe, the region in which Boomerang currently available to African viewers reside have all announced the return or launch of Cartoonito with no update as to when the refurbished preschool brand will return (my guess March or April).

Since last year, viewers have been worried about the abrupt ending to Boomerang as seen in Latin America where the channel was folded under Cartoonito but as seen in these changes. There's still a chance for all of that to change...for now.

Cartoonito is expected to launch in some parts of Europe and the likelihood is whatever preschool content Boomerang managed to pick up or is currently airing will move to Cartoonito and WarnerMedia will shift attention away from the brand as HBO Max rolls out in the market.

If I had to guess, the brand will likely dissolve by 2023.
