The Four Faces Of The Good Doctor

A while back, I did a story on Can Love Become Money's Turkish counterpart As Die Skoen Pas and the point I made in all of this it's not about hating a duplicate but more on awareness to one's surroundings and as mentioned not everyone will like the same things or at least in a certain structure.

On today's agenda we have Mucize Doctor (Miracle Doctor known to South Africans as Dokter Ali) is a 2019 medical drama that follows the antics of a doctor who suffers from autism. As a child, he was discovered to have a genius-level memory and keen spatial skills which gave him the title of Miracle Doctor.

But the story was inspired by none other than KBS's The Good Doctor (Gut Dakteo) which won many accolades during its run in 2013 for Best Actor, Best Couple, Best Drama and even got plaque of recognition for creating awareness about autism and how socially challenged individuals can contribute to society.

The success lead to several regional adaptations including America's The Good Doctor from ABC which is one of the longest adaptations currently in its fifth season with a sixth scheduled for release in future. This version was produced by David Shore who went on to create the medical drama, House.

Other adaptations include the one currently seen on eExtra, the Japanese adaptation Guddo Dokuta and most recent Hong Kong series, The People I Have Loved for the character Dr. Koo Hei-sun.

In the end, The Good Doctor's legacy lives on with these regional versions and it doesn't seem like the journey for this autistic doctor will be stopping anytime soon.

Until Further Notice
DStv customers have until the end of May to tune into Dokter Ali on eExtra thereafter they'll either have to get Openview or wait to view them on e.tv. As far as replacements go HONEY and Via duplicate channel could be added on Family and Access packages.

As mentioned earlier, eExtra's offering is regarded as local at this point if MultiChoice were to redirect audiences to kykNET and Mzansi Wethu for something "similar".

Sesame Workshop And Discovery Education Launch Early Learning Channel

Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit media and educational organization behind Sesame Street, and Discovery Education, a worldwide edtech leader whose state-of-the-art, K-12 digital platform supports learning wherever it takes place, announced the creation of a new Sesame Workshop-branded early learner channel designed to meet the needs of children from PreK to grade 2. Consistent with Discovery Education’s solutions for schools, the channel will include high-quality video content today’s students know and love, as well as lesson plans and educator resources; interactive games and activities for kids; and family partnership supports—all focused on a whole-child approach.

The Sesame Workshop channel, with innovative teaching and learning solutions, will be available in the fall on Discovery Education’s learning platform. Beginning with curricular resources designed to address new and continuing needs associated with interrupted schooling and prioritized by Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSR) funding, the content comprises social and emotional development and wellness; foundational academic skills in math and literacy; and a social studies-aligned curriculum focused on positive and healthy identity and sense of belonging. At the center of these resources will be research-based content from across the wide range of Sesame Workshop media, including Sesame Street, The Electric Company, and more.

“Sesame Workshop is committed to ensuring school readiness and helping children develop the emotional, social, and cognitive skills needed to become lifelong learners,” said Akimi Gibson, Vice President & Educational Publisher, Sesame Workshop. “As part of this ongoing commitment, we are thrilled to partner with Discovery Education to distribute proven, cohesive yet flexible PreK-2 curricular resources directly into the hands of schools and the educators of our youngest learners. Discovery Education’s 20+ years of expertise in the learning space and their leadership in delivering high-quality supplemental curriculum at tremendous scale make them an ideal collaborator in our efforts to help all children grow smarter, stronger, and kinder.”

“Sesame Workshop’s success can be attributed to its collaborative, research-intensive approach to the development of highly engaging, child-centered media and programs,” said Pete Weir, Chief Product Officer, Discovery Education. “Their offerings reflect both a deep understanding of children’s developmental needs and the best ways to address those needs. We are excited to partner with Sesame Workshop to bring the first dedicated PreK-2 channel to our award-winning K-12 platform, and are eager to collaborate with educators nationwide on their efforts to align their early childhood initiatives, state standards, and kindergarten readiness goals.”

Additional content areas, such as STEAM, healthy habits, and coding are being prioritized through educator feedback and will be added in the future.

New Series Alert: Family Secrets Makes Their Free-To-Air Debut On SABC 3

Earlier in the year, it was reported that SABC 2 will rebroadcast Zee TV's Saloni and East Meets West in the coming future after a decade of no Bollywood. It seems like SABC 3 will be joining the Bollywood spectacle.

Apparently, the public broadcaster picked up rights to the 2017 drama Rishton Ka Chakravyuh (Labrinth Of Relationships) which is also known on Star Life as Family Secrets.

Based on the story of Lai Bhaari, Family Secrets revolves around a mother, authoritative royal businesswoman Satrupa, and her 17-year-old free-spirited, confident daughter Anami. The show depicts the life of a royal, industrialist family that resides in Laal Mahal, the house of conspiracies.

The show stars Narayani Shastri, Sangita Ghosh, Mahima Makwana, Ankit Siwach and Ajay Chaudhary.

Family Secrets is scheduled to air every weekday at 19:00 on SABC 3 from Monday 18 April. In other developments, Zee One is scheduled to air the African adaptation of the Indian drama, Mehek.

Could SABC 1-3 Undergo Some Lineup Changes On DStv Following New Regulation Set By ICASA?

ICASA published amendments to the so-called “must-carry” regulations on Thursday, in which it reiterated that satellite broadcasters (or at least those that offer more than 29 channels) must carry the television programmes of the public broadcasting service.

Until now, the regulations have allowed MultiChoice and other pay-TV operators to carry the SABC public service channels at no cost. Under the amended regulations, the parties will have to negotiate a contract deemed fair to both parties.

Since last year, MultiChoice (through SuperSport) held free-to-air rights for PSL broadcasting them exclusively on their platforms through the SABC channels while other outlets that carried these brands got a different game playing on the same channel.

Theory 1:

Although the public broadcaster is celebrating their success a little too soon, every agreement has a loophole and it won't be long till MultiChoice finds that dark hole and buries them.

The public broadcaster is probably hoping MultiChoice will pay them based on production costs and all other expenses when the truth is they'll likely look at the costs to distribute each station besides that the quality differs from Mzansi Magic.

Theory 2:
This new regulation although granting SABC more revenue could increase the amount of exclusivity/management on their channels not only targeting sports but other aspects of the public broadcaster including general entertainment and news.

Instead of taking away Uzalo, what if this new deal grows the number of SABC channels instead in the process.

What if MultiChoice decided to distribute a seperate feed of the SABC Sport channel which didn't disrupt the lineup of the 3 SABC channels and broadcast games restricted from platforms like TelkomOne and Openview.

The series commences at 18:50 from Monday 4 April.

Taffy renewed for a third season on Boomerang

Cyber Group Studios and French kids broadcaster Gulli have announced the return of Taffy which has been renewed for a third season. Production is set to begin later in the year.

Season three of kids comedy Taffy will continue the capers of Bentley the dog, who is determined to show his owner that the cat she just took in is actually a raccoon. The format of the third season has not been finalized yet.

Season 1 airs Tuesday, 5 April at 22:00.

Star Life to introduce Lost In Love

Last month, Star Life announced they will undergo some lineup changes by moving repeats to the afternoon slot and movies to weekends as they try to boost their primetime offering and launch the new series A New Life.

According to sources, the channel is said to air a Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Mein (Lost In Love) which is a remake of Bengali series Kusum Dola from Star Jalsha.

Virat, a young police officer, marries to honour the promise he made to his dying father. But when his former lover re-enters his life, he finds his heart pulled in both directions.

History: MultiChoice Bleeding Money On The SABC And eMedia Investments

In 1998, the SABC began to broadcast two TV channels to the rest of Africa: SABC Africa, a news service, and Africa 2 Africa, an entertainment channel to the DStv platform. Few years down the line, the pair were merged only to be subsequently discontinued in 2008.

A year prior, SABC News International launched  alongside a potential pay-tv operator e.Sat TV hoping to take on the likes of Telkom Media, On Digital Media and MultiChoice. Feeling that the market was big enough for two operators the plan was later abolished.

In 2008, it was announced that e.Sat TV would instead work as a channel supplier just like Siyaya TV with Moja Love to MultiChoice's DStv with the eNews Channel known to the current audience as eNCA.

In 2013, the SABC signed a R500 million deal with MultiChoice which would see the launch of the revised SABC News International which was shortened to SABC News accompanied by an entertainment channel, SABC Encore.

In 2017, e.tv's 4 channels at the time were exclusive to Openview with eExtra available on StarSat launched on DStv under eMedia Investments which saw a cut in carriage fees which went from R240 million with just eNCA to R140.8 million with the new additions.

Amidst the pandemic in 2020, you saw MultiChoice making cutbacks in an attempt to streamline which saw the discontinuation of SABC Encore which is rumoured to make a comeback later in 2022 the same time e.tv's 4 channels were reportedly going dark on the pay-tv platform.

In the pandemic, MultiChoice introduced some new methods such as the reduction of DStv Premiership to households carrying the Openview platform which tuned into a duplicate SABC 3 or Sport channel now it's seperate versions of the same channel.

Example: while Openview customers view Bafana Bafana on SABC 1 at 7pm DStv customers are watching DStv Premiership on the same channel.

MultiChoice has expressed on several occasions that they'd never aid SABC as it would be an extra expense to consumer's monthly subscription to DStv but seperate SABC channels says otherwise although the channel is blocked when you miss your payment and some of the content is added to DStv Catch-Up.

The SABC struggles to fill their end of the bargain with SuperSport so although no money is coming to them with DStv outside of SABC News and advertising. The chances of them getting discounted sports doesn't seem far fetched and the rate could have gone up with the feed separations.

e.tv was likely making money from their African feed known as eAfrica or eGhana and now eMedia Investments is taking the pay-tv platform to court regarding the carriage agreement for their 4 channels in South Africa.

The Challenges Of Getting Bold And The Beautiful And Days Of Our Lives On DStv

(You can now share on Facebook)

In 2016, the SABC scrapped Days Of Our Lives from SABC 3 and a few years along the line Bold And The Beautiful. Amidst that time, e.tv became the official broadcaster for Days Of Our Lives while EVA (DStv 141) got Bold And The Beautiful.

AMC International, the parent company for EVA opted to discontinue distribution of the channel and in that was Bold And The Beautiful which has since then been viewable on Vodacom's Video Play while Days Of Our Lives will be out on the streets as e.tv opts for more local content.

MultiChoice is pretty much the only hope consumers have in saving these programs. Even though, it would mean paying to view them anything seen on their platform especially in this field can be viewed as a goldmine.

Second batch of rumoured series coming to M-Net, 1Magic, Me and Showmax

There's several from free-to-air stations which have since then been seen on a channel like M-Net such as Survivor, The Amazing Race and NCIS from SABC 3 and America's Got Talent, Chicago PD and Blackish from e.tv.

Even the of rejects such as Dr. Phil, The Real and The Talk from the SABC and UEFA and WWE from e.tv can be transmitted on DStv.

Here's my suggestions for Bold and Days

From what was stated a few years ago, scheduling led to the abandonment of Bold but couldn't M-Net perhaps move it to another station like Me or its local counterpart Mzansi Wethu to reduce the repeat pendant tendency.

Another option could be curating a channel to insert shows like Bold and Days alongside Emmerdale and Coronation Street but chances are the channel would wind up like FOX Life as viewers would expect a stack of content for which such channel might not meet.

The troubles with DStv

As mentioned, M-Net has shown interest if I had to expand a bit further onto their scheduling issue we're basically dealing with a soap opera that has characters that progress daily with their lives and viewers don't want to miss a single detail.

It's not like Judge Judy, where you can skip a couple of hurdles and still make it to the finish line.

MultiChoice have their reasons for stalling I believe these two would fit better on M-Net as they're going through somewhat of an identity crisis with the increased number of streamers bundling content available on the channel.

Of course, M-Net is vouching for limited content services so curating it into an existing or standalone channel on DStv wouldn't be such a bad idea honestly.

Cancelled??? Could The Estate Be On The Chopping Block Following Its Dismal Viewership On SABC 3 And Removal On SABC 1 For New Series, The Executive?

According to TVSA, an independent website focused on keeping viewers up-to-date on TV related matters in South Africa and their interests in other regions had announced that SABC 1 will retire The Estate from their primetime viewing.

The Estate has been in a heap of trouble ever since it was introduced on the revamped S3 channel. Compared to all other dramas which can pull at least a million viewers across the public broadcasters stations, The Estate could only pull 300000 viewers monthly.

When it moved to SABC 1, the viewership on S3 began to skyrocket although not a million they were able to double their viewers. Even on SABC 1, the show went on to become one of the top 10 shows on the channel.

The Executive which is set to replace The Estate on SABC 1 (notice how they have the same intials T and E) tells the story of corrupt businessman Bonginkosi Khumalo who rose to power with a troubled past. He needs to fix the problems in his professional and private life if he ever wants to get ahead in life.

The series airs Mondays to Wednesdays from March 7th at 19:30 while Ses Top'La airs Thursdays and Fridays. Interesting enough there's still a couple of storylines viewers that hadn't aired on SABC 1 for The Estate.

The SABC doesn't seem to care about that either unless there's a reason to all that. They took long to renew the show and aren't profiting from the series so the idea of them cancelling it after the current season or even by 2023 doesn't seem far fetched.

SABC 3 has been struggling for nearly a decade and the public broadcaster has been constantly adjusting the lineup on that station. Although, many feel the need format to scrap the channel perhaps the only solution is not to invest in high budget content e.g. The Estate.

Update: The Estate returns as a double bill from March 8 for the rest of season 1.

SABC Finally Switch SABC 1-3 To HD On Openview, Still Silent Over The Two Upcoming Channels

Last year, eMedia Investments forged a deal with SABC which would see SABC 1-3 switch to HD and launch further channels to the platform within that year. At the time, SABC Sport alongside SABC's 19 radio stations have since then made available to the Openview platform.

They failed to launch the two further channels as well as switch the current ones to high definition but now that all changes as Openview announced through their social pages that SABC 1-3 will be available in crystal clear HD after waiting almost a year.

The channels have been viewable in this format on both MultiChoice's DStv and Telkom's streaming service TelkomOne with Openview joining pair as the only providers to not only house these channels in HD but also operate their 19 radio stations.

Seeing that SABC failed to launch their two entertainment channels to Openview in 2021. They'll likely provide an update later in the year perhaps even sooner than expected.

eToonz needs these improvements

As mentioned on this site last year, SABC Encore and Children could be the two channels Openview customers have been longing for while SABC Parliament is a side dish probably for another platform.

These names were spotted on LyngSat I mean whatever is there isn't taken for granted and there's no way they could have thought of these names without any input from the SABC.

SABC Children and Parliament was part of the public broadcaster's DTT plans for 2012 which fell flat and Parliament was resubmitted 4 years ago while SABC had mentioned in an interview that they have considered reviving the controversial SABC Encore.

Reasons why these two could be for Openview and not Parliament, the two entertainment channels launching soon will house archived material and again perfect fit for those two possible entertainment channels.

Unlike Parliament, SABC Children wasn't part of SABC's DTT plans for 2018 making it a liability so the only reason such channel would be conceived by them was if they'd get something out of it. SABC 3 despite being the least watched between the three SABC channels still brings in the dough.

Regardless, the two upcoming channels are launching on a nonexclusive basis meaning any other platform such as DStv and StarSat even TelkomOne can package part if not all these channels.

#WeLoveRepeats: SABC 3 Is Suitable Alternative To e.tv's Anaconda But "No One Watches It" And Rewind Adds Three Series From eExtra, Till The End Of Time, Dare To Love And SURPRISE!!! SURPRISE!!! Blue Venom Girl

e.tv is screening Anaconda for the millionth time...yet we have SABC 3

As seen through several ads and other platforms, e.tv has brought back Anaconda for the 21st time and to be honest I didn't want join in the frenzy unless there was something noteworthy and what better than to pair it with a rival brand S3.

SABC 3 underwent several lineup changes throughout the decade and through each carnation viewers were given something similar to e.tv and it wasn't till April 2021 that the channel acknowledged their position in the market.

SABC 3 always had potential to dethrone e.tv but the problem dives down to management and viewer's preferences. As stated by the SABC, viewers are accustomed to what's currently available on the other 2 channels.

This issue always existed but the problem began to worsen once all their brands went through radical changes and SABC 3 came out with the most blows not only was offering weak but the viewership underwent the same traits.

As mentioned it was only April of last year that the channel became a save heaven to the international offering on e.tv between 20:30-23:00. Even the movies improved with a dedicated Marvel festival featuring 4 unseen movies from e.tv including Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther.

Everything dives down to viewership if you compare the ratings of both channels particularly movies SABC 3 was fortunate enough to pull 800K viewers for Black Panther while e.tv was able to pull 4 million with repeats of Big Momma's House.

South Africa is expected to fully migrate away from analogue tv by March. Thereafter, several channels are expected to lose millions of viewers after the switch and this could even out the viewership with SABC 3 seeing that it's more of a mobile brand.

More repeats boarding the Openview platform as we speak

If you've been keeping tabs on the lineup, Rewind will introduce more Indian series to the existing Indian portfolio on Openview. As the name suggests they're more eExtra repeats: Till The End Of Time and Dare To Love.

Of course, something that never crossed our minds and still comes a shocker is Blue Venom Girl. The series will only launch on eExtra this Friday and Rewind will be used a catch-up channel and not only for yesteryear stock.

If I had to guess there's some news awaiting the brand and I'm referring to content type news.

Till The End Of Time and Dare To Love will air Monday to Saturday respectively at 21:15 and 22:05 interesting enough that's where eExtra airs Die Put and High Society Scandal so they're avoiding beef.

A repeat of Blue Venom Girl will start the following week at 14:55 from Monday to Friday.
