What Really Happened To VH1 Classic On DStv And Where Is It Now?

The popular music brand VH1 Classic started out mainly consisting of niche genres which didn't appease the masses at the time which led to its downfall on DStv and the switch to VH1 Classic.

At the time this channel was still around, they were plenty of channels offering international hits mainly modern day music before localising their offering which welcomed a new rail of viewers while others resorted to other means like streaming to cater for their tastes.

In all those eras, VH1 Classic stood out from the rest with their selection of international classic hits while Mzansi Music dealt with the local spectrum.

It wasn't until 2019 that ViacomCBS announced the discontinuation of VH1 Classic and the launch of the European MTV Music24 which therefore killed all their classical tunes for more modernizing.

It wasn't until that period that most channels which had a stack of international hits reduced the lineup for more localised tunes therefore boosting the value of MTV Music24 which doesn't cater for that region as it adapting to a European feed.

MTV Music24 wasn't all rainbows and sunshine aside from not carrying any fragment of VH1 Classic. The offering was very repetitive and they'd repeat the same music in the same order it was arranged and this continued on until last year where it was replaced with the pop based brand MTV Hits.

When VH1 Classic was terminated people pointed the finger toward DStv and when MTV Hits dethroned MTV Music24 there was a lot of silence in the switch as well as the reception. What some don't realise was that there was more to the story.

Tracing back to VH1 Classic, the channel was handled by Europe which used it as an entertainment channel to repeat programs from MTV. Africa got a different feed for some apparent reason.

In 2016, the owners of VH1 being announced that VH1 Classic would rebrand to MTV Classic as it was suspected that VH1 was being terminated internationally seeing that it was a property of MTV. Of course, this switch wasn't applicable to viewers in South Africa.

VH1 Classic was initially discontinued in 2016 so the feed in South Africa was just on autopilot for the past 3 years as they tried sourcing out the major reject MTV Music24.

MTV Music24 vanished two years later and if you google the channel. It appears that the brand was phased out likely as part of the initiative for MTV Global formerly MTV Europe which is limiting the localised feeds probably due to the launch of Paramount+.

Disney plans to close 100 international channels in the near future following the successful launch of their streaming service Disney+. It had been speculated that other companies will likely follow at a given time.

About VH1 Classic, the channel is currently known as MTV Classic I presume the reason it wasn't picked up in Africa was that ViacomCBS was looking for something that appease the current masses and anything like MTV Classic didn't fit that description.

MTV Classic has become a dumpster fire with its stack of repeats pulling 16000 viewers a month in a market with a large amount of pay-tv households. ViacomCBS no longer shares details about the viewership and I wouldn't be shocked if the channel was discontinued with nothing left in place.

A Story Of Friendship And Soccer! Coach Me If You Can Scores On Cartoon Network Africa

Imagine finding out that your favourite international soccer idol is turned into a soccer ball, and his only chance of returning to human form is pairing him up with a naïve preteen who has limited soccer skills. This can only be a recipe for whacky adventures and unstoppable laughter. Coach Me if You Can is Cartoon Network Africa’s new soccer-focused comedy, launching on Monday, 24 January at 17:00 CAT.

The story follows a wet behind the ears young soccer fan, Daniel Sissou, and his soccer ball that he never lets out of his sight. Daniel talks to his soccer ball, and everyone thinks he’s gone bonkers – but the big secret is that the ball is actually his idol, Erico Platana, an international soccer star.

Erico Platana is transformed into a soccer ball by a crazy wizard. After refusing to sign his autograph to change back, the egotistical football star is forced to swallow his pride and help Daniel become a professional soccer player. Daniel and Erico’s lives are light years apart but brought together by pure chance. They soon become the best of friends who make every day an adventurous one, turning their small city upside down. The show is all about the value of hard work and an odd friendship that will leave you wanting more.

Cartoon Network understands the African continent's love affair with soccer. With Coach Me If You Can's launch, Cartoon Network fans will enjoy the best soccer moments and experiences, resonating with local audiences. Characters like Daniel and Erico will keep young and older viewers entertained for hours on end.

Tune in to watch how things can only get better for a boy, a ball, and two friends in Cartoon Network’s brand-new show, Coach Me If You Can, weekdays from Monday, 24 January 2022 at 17:00 CAT.

#WeAreDrama: High Society: Scandal Has Been Added Onto eVOD Ahead Of Linear Debut And Dayan, Destructive Beauty Has Release Date On eExtra + Hell's Kitchen Alongside A New Season Of Dance Moms Debuts On eReality

The Koreans are coming to eVOD

In the start of 2022, we got to learn more about eMedia's streaming service eVOD. Aside from the fact that they're supplying future local and Turkish dramas for e.tv and eExtra. They seem to be leveraging more content from eExtra such as Indian and Korean dramas.

This should have been suspected when they added 10 episodes of Two Women before they could even air them on eExtra. My guess is that eMedia is trying to appease the consumers there by giving them an endless lineup of entertainment to avoid losing customers.

The family drama High Society: Scandal had recently been added to eVOD and just like Two Women and every other Afrikaans Premium drama viewers seemingly get 10 episodes per week.

Interesting enough, Dayan, Destructive Beauty was added with 44 episodes while the remaining 22 episodes are nowhere in site for the time being.

eExtra currently has 33 slots on weekdays of which they maintain 48,5% while the remaining 51,5% is divided between e.tv and eVOD but unlike e.tv the offering through their streaming service doesn't look like repeats as they're on different platforms.

This is an indicator that primetime offering on eExtra have begun plummeting for more repeats. This issue is common amongst international channels but the one that struggles to cope with this are the main brands being e.tv.

Main brands are regarded as premium for their unique offering and try not to replicate from other channels or brands. The minute content from their own platform makes way to their own brand it takes away the premium.

Outside of local and Kuiertyd, e.tv has less of that compared to the rest of their channels.

Dayan, Destructive Beauty coming longer than you think on eExtra

Dayan, Destructive Beauty is currently streaming on eVOD through the Indian and Korean section of the platform complimenting other Indian soaps Piyaa Albela and the first two seasons of Naagin.

The third season is currently airing on eExtra and will continue until January 20. Thereafter the new series Vishkanya which will likely be bundled on eVOD ahead of time replaces Naagin in that timeslot.

Dayan, Destructive Beauty will likely air May 2 after Vishkanya so viewers could use this time to stream it on eVOD or find other programs as they wait.

Gordon Ramsay is coming to eReality

Gordon Ramsay stars in the American adaptation of the British cooking show launching later in the month on South Africa's most popular reality channel.

Each season, two teams of chefs compete for a job as head chef at a restaurant, while working in the kitchen of a restaurant set up in the television studio. A progressive elimination format reduces a field of 20 to 12 to a single winner over the course of each season. In a typical episode, a single contestant is selected for elimination.

Dance Moms follows the training and careers of children in dance and show business under the tutelage of Abby Lee Miller as well as the relationships between Miller, the dancers, and their often bickering mothers.

Hell's Kitchen starts 22 January at 16:40 and Dance Moms airs 2 days later on eReality.
