What's Replacing Days Of Our Lives On e.tv Later In April?

Days Of Our Lives will be airing for 6 days next month as eMedia Investments chose not to renew their contract with the suppliers of this CBS drama similar to SABC's move with Bold And The Beautiful its survival of the fittest.

Remember a few years back, the public broadcaster opted to localise their offering only for it to tank or at least on SABC 2 & 3 department well you can actually see where the corrupt Hlaudi was getting at.

Several international companies such as The Walt Disney Company, Paramount, NBCUniversal and WarnerMedia plan to rollout streaming services in South Africa by the near future and for many decades their count was viewed on e.tv and DStv, as seen with some outlets they're taking back their content.

This wasn't the case for Days Of Our Lives, eMedia Investments made the call to have it extinguished as repeats of Imbewu and Isono will occupy the timeslot as e.tv hasn't repeated anything in the 8:30pm timeslot.

Questions amount on how The Black Door and possibly Imbewu will be slotted in the weekend. During that time, four other dramas have an omnibus so where does that leave these two if I had to guess Craze and the weekend afternoon movies.

These changes may seem hazardous but you can clearly see their motive for all this - streaming. They want to have clear certainty that the brand will be around for the foreseeable future and not end up like Bop TV where the only thing consumers acknowledged was what other companies offered.

eMedia Updates (AS EXPECTED): Rewind Killed Off For eXposed, Imbewu Moves To A New Timeslot On e.tv, 8pm Movies Move An Hour Later On e.tv, And Days Of Our Lives Scrapped On e.tv From April

e.tv is dropping Days of Our Lives from 11 April with the red letter broadcaster which is shaking up its primetime schedule with timeslot changes and adding a new local telenovela, The Black Door about a township brothel.

e.tv has not decided not to renew the contract for the American soap Days of Our Lives on its schedule, using the money to invest in making more local content for the channel as well as its eVOD video streaming service.

Days of Our Lives will end on 11 April on e.tv, a few years after e.tv took over the soap from SABC3 that decided to cancel it as well, with e.tv's decision that will likely not go down very well with loyal viewers who switched to e.tv from SABC3 to follow the daily dramas of the American townsfolk of Salem.

"By adding new things to e.tv's schedule and trying to create new content some of the things have to go since there are only so many hours in a day. Days of Our Lives is discontinued from 11 April," says Marlon Davids, managing director of e.tv channels.

From 11 April e.tv will be showing the Clive Morris Productions series Isono that was on Paramount Africa's BET (DStv 129), with e.tv that has acquired the free-to-air rights for its 20:30 timeslot after the channel's English TV news bulletin.

Imbewu which will start its 5th season is moving to 21:00 from 11 April, with the new risque local series The Black Door that will be shown Mondays to Fridays in the 21:30 timeslot.

About the schedule change and dropping Days , Marlon Davids says "it's something that's needed for us to structure the schedule to create flow to navigate audience in early primetime and to keep them on e.tv".

e.tv is also dropping the American procedural dramas like the Chicago and NCIS series.

Potential Candidates For The eMovies Channels: From SPI International's FilmBox To Shorts TV, Could These Channels Replace eMovies On DStv?

Also Read

MultiChoice is planning to introduce a second movie channel later in the year to replace eMovies and eMovies Extra in South Africa and serve as an additional accessory alongside DreamWorks Channel in the rest of Africa. Of course, details of the supposed channel remains unknown.

Last year, it was reported that MultiChoice was looking into adding movie channel at first it was speculated to be for the rest of Africa as South Africa had a large bulk of movie channels until recently as indicated above.

We did a list of potential candidates for Disney XD and surprise surprise one of the channels on the list ended up the space so let's do one for the movie channels.

tvN pushing to become a permanent linear channel in Africa
Could Nicktoons be discontinued in Africa and likely the rest of the world?
Multichoice won't be adding anymore community channels

Since the restructuring of M-Net Movies it was evident at this point that MultiChoice is trying to diversify the lineup e.g. Maisha Magic Movies and KIX. If they can't kill the existing repeats on the current movie channels they can limit the toxins from spreading.

Here's a list of potential candidates that MIGHT fill up the spot of the eMovies channels:

1. FilmBox
Owned by the makers of the most popular entertainment channel in their division, Timeless Dizi Channel. FilmBox is modernized AMC featuring a selection of international movies and series ranging from comedy, romance, action and drama basically a mashup of the two eMovies channels.

2. Positiv
Owned by Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN), the channel features a variety of Christian themed family oriented films from small to big Hollywood studios.

3. ShortsTV
Managed by Shorts International in partnership with AMC International, ShortsTV is a dedicated network for short films whether you want Oscar nominated films or low budget ShortsTV is the place for you. It was pop-up channel on the DStv app.

Other candidates would be an Indian movie channel and another Chinese or African movie channel.

These are just one of the few channels the pay-tv platform will close or lose as more channels are expected to suffer the same fate as the 4 e.tv channels and Tellytrack such as The Walt Disney Company's set of channels as they're moving away from cable or at least not with ESPN.

According to a user at Digital Forum, Paramount plans to close down music brands MTV Base and MTV Classic a year after the black based entertainment channel BET with cut off and merged onto the streaming service, Paramount+.

MTV Base and Classic (formerly VH1 Classic) launched in 1999 as part of MTV's digital boutique of music channels and throughout its existence several markets such as France and Africa launched a localised brand for Base while other parts got Classic.

According to some viewers in these regions, the brands have become obsolete especially in an era where a platforms like iTunes and Spotify already exist. Just like Africa, even the UK have begun streamlining their offering.

Although, MTV Base performed dismally in these regions it doesn't have much affect for viewers in other regions compared to MTV Classic as the brand is considered outdated in this century. It was one of the reasons Paramount Africa opted for MTV Hits (formerly Music24) and not its predecessor.

If anything, the only brand that will likely get phased out at this point would be Nicktoons as Paramount seems more focused on scrapping non and underperforming channels. On top of reducing various local feeds of some of their brands.
